About the Schemes

The basic mandate of the Social Welfare Department is to provide institutional arrangement and community based facilities for protection and care of vulnerable sections of society viz.  Children, the aged, the disabled, and the women in need of help. It also has schemes and projects for dealing with social evils like alcoholism, drug abuse, dowry etc. 

    All the schemes will continue in the next Annual Plan 2009 -10 considering the directions of the Government of India and demands from the general public of these islands, few new programmes have been incorporated in the Annual Plan from 2007-08 onwards. On the recommendation of the Working Group a separate sector have been created for “Empowerment of Women and Development of Children” with 6 schemes separated from the Sector Social  Security and welfare.  The objectives of the schemes are as follows:

Sub-Sector-I- Social  Security and welfare

1. Strengthening of Directorate of Social Welfare

There are three components proposed in this scheme for Annual Plan 08-09 namely

    A) Direction and Administration This Scheme provides for strengthening the Directorate by creating more posts to establish more sections so as to avoid time lag in the implementation of various welfare programmes.

   A.1) Drug abuse and Alcoholism: It is proposed to establish a de- addiction cell in the Directorate of social Welfare.

   A.2) Grant in Aid to Voluntary Organization: The Department proposes to provide grant in aid to voluntary organizations/NGOs for implementation scheme & welfare services for the upliftment of the orphans and socially & economically backward class.

Objectives: There are three components under this scheme viz, home for orphan girls, Day care Centres & construction of Anganwadis.
